Created just six years ago, the Grasshoppers are an unusually close-knit group, consisting of lifelong friends and a father-son team. The band traces its origins to a 1978 encounter between Glenn and rhythm guitarist Glen Garrett, then a recent transplant from California, at Weiser, Idaho’s National Old-Time Fiddler’s Contest And Festival. Though the two hit it off immediately, it was more than a decade before they were able to join forces in the same band. In the meantime, Glen’s son Jeremy, who plays fiddle and shares lead vocals, had befriended Honi Glenn, a Texas native who had grown up singing gospel music with her mother before moving to Idaho as a teenager. When Glen heard Honi sing at a talent show contest Jeremy was also entered in, he was struck by her rich talent, and before long, Randy, Glen and Honi were entertaining visitors at a nearby ski resort. When Jeremy returned from college, he joined them, and the Grasshoppers were born.
