The Nob Hill Boys
The Nob Hill Boys are a
modern bluegrass group whose commitment to tradition is clear in every
aspect of their performances. Gathering around a single microphone like the
bands that defined bluegrass music in the 1940s and '50s, this
Wisconsin-based quintet evokes in audiences a rare sense of continuity with
American folk culture. "We have great respect for the founders of the
music," says Dan O'Brien, "and the covers and original tunes that we play
reflect that." Fans often recollect an early exposure to bluegrass that the
Nob Hill Boys performance brought back to them. Still, as Jon Peik explains,
"We don't think of ourselves as a retro band. We play old and new music
within a style that we enjoy. To lots of people, especially in our part of
the world, it's a new sound." That sound includes exceptional vocal
harmonies which feature prominently in the Nob Hill Boys stage show. "We try
to capture the straightforward soulfulness that made bluegrass powerful two
generations ago," adds John Fabke, "and present it with sincerity today."
Coming up on their fourth anniversary as a band, the Nob Hill Boys work hard
to remind us that the musical heart of America is not on television or in a
store, but is alive and well in the schoolhouses, churches, and taverns that
were its birthplace.
